Case study: An excellent blend for Patrick
With his trademark big smile and can-do attitude, Patrick has been bringing joy to Bedford for over five years.
“I’m really happy where I am now,” he beams.
When he’s not attending the Adelaide centre’s day options programs or community access and lifestyle activities and courses, Patrick’s main love is cooking up a storm in Bedford’s busy hospitality division where he works two days a week.
“Everything in the kitchen interests me,” Patrick says. “Roasts are my specialty.”
Patrick’s supervisor Beni agrees.
“He’s really turned a corner – he’s becoming more independent every week. His knife skills are top notch!”
Patrick also volunteers with Bedford’s community partners including Meals on Wheels, helping to distribute meals to vulnerable residents.
In 2020, when some social programs were cancelled due to COVID-19, Patrick unearthed a hidden talent – singing. He lent his dulcet tones to a Bedford music video that went viral on social media.
This experience cemented Patrick’s love of singing and he became a founding member of the Bedford Beats Choir.
Patrick’s dad John says he’s proud of the way Patrick has grown and developed during his time at Bedford.
“Transitioning from Patrick’s special school was uncharted territory for us. Finding the right provider for the next stage of his life was certainly an adjustment,” John says.
“But we felt comfortable with what Bedford offered. Their services have been an excellent blend for Patrick.”
John says accessing multiple NDIS supports at one organisation suits Patrick perfectly.
