Disability Action Week will run from 9 to 15 September this year with a focus on empowering people with disability and promoting inclusiveness and support throughout the wider community.

The theme of the week is An all abilities Queensland: everybody has a role to play and will see a range of events, programs and activities run by businesses and volunteer organisations throughout the state.

The Queensland Government has announced 39 not-for-profit organisations who will receive a share of $150,000 to help with event costs, as part of the Disability Community Event Grants program.

This also includes funding for events held in Queensland on International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) on 3 December.

With 1 in 5 Queenslanders living with a disability, Disability Action Week and IDPWD are two of the biggest celebrations throughout the year, with a wide variety of events and activities on offer.

Queensland’s Minister for Disability Services Coralee O’Rourke announced the successful recipients and is pleased a number of events will be held throughout regional Queensland.

“From a Disability Surfing Day at Yeppoon to a Day in the Bay event at Hervey Bay, these events and activities have inclusion and disability awareness at heart,” she says.

“I’m pleased to see a number of events in regional Queensland are receiving this funding, including a Charleville arts festival and a picnic day on Thursday Island, providing a great boost for people with disability in these regions.”

Other events to receive funding include a musical production in Nundah and a Black Tie Ball in Jindalee.

“Supporting community and not-for-profit groups to host these events is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to the All Abilities Queensland: Opportunities for All state disability plan,” Mrs O’Rourke says.

All Abilities Queensland: Opportunities for All works in partnership with organisations, communities and individuals to break down the barriers of people living with disability and provide equal opportunity for all, designed to complement the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) across Queensland.
