There are two causes for celebration within the field of disability winter sports, with a special anniversary being commemorated on Australian Disabled Wintersport Day.

Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) will celebrate 40 years of raising awareness, embracing diversity and overcoming adversity through its work with Australian winter sports, on Thursday.

The day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate DWA and the vital role the organisation plays in empowering and encouraging people with disability to get involved in winter sports.

DWA founding member and Paralympic Chef de Mission Nick Dean says DWA was established in 1978 to make winter sports accessible to all.

“DWA has grown to become a respected and highly valued member of the snow sports community, as well as the broader sport and recreation industry.”

“Its reputation is built on collaborating with others to introduce the fun of snow sports to people with disabilities, their families and friends.”

He says DWA members enjoy the benefits, challenges and snow experience of winter sports alongside the priceless memories and new friendships built on the Australian Alpine.

“DWA is an outstanding exemplar of a highly effective, not for profit, volunteer based, charitable organisation that knows what it is doing.”

To get involved in Australian Disabled Wintersport Day, DWA is encouraging the public to wear a touch of white snow.

You can also host an office awareness day, donate or become a member of the organisation.
