Family ties supporting brothers to thrive

Melbourne resident David is getting the best of both worlds, having his brother by his side as well as support through his brother’s work as owner of disability service provider, Just Better Care.

Eight years on from a life-changing accident, David has forged a career in the building industry and is more socially active than ever thanks to this support.

At 22 years old, David was enjoying a day at the beach with mates when he dived into the water – something he’d done countless times before.

But on this occasion, David hit a sandbar. It resulted in C5 and C6 quadriplegia, a six-month hospital stay and the reality that he would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Prior to the accident David had been a fierce competitor in national swimming titles and was completing a construction and building course at TAFE.

Then his life had stopped in its tracks, but not for long.

Christian has been by his side supporting him, not only as his brother, but as the owner of Just Better Care Bayside Melbourne, where David is a customer.

Born just two years apart, the two are close in age and in nature. David was the best man at Christian’s wedding and they still live next door to each other.

The accident inspired a new perspective for Christian, too.

After 10 years as an occupational therapist, David’s accident taught Christian about the scope of disability support, particularly for young people.

“Now I see it from a personal point of view and have a much better understanding of the effects that small things have on a person living with disability,” Christian says.

He says this has given him a new perspective within his work.

“Every customer is someone’s brother, sister, mother, father or friend and they should have a professional support person who adds something to their lives,” Christian says.

That is certainly the case for David. His support team plans regular fishing trips, his new sporting passion and are currently working to send him on a week-long getaway to his family’s beach house.

Christian says determination and a positive attitude also led David to securing work in the building industry.

“There are people who need support to live a rich and rewarding life,” Christian says.

“The key is having the right people around who can help make this a reality.

“Ultimately, I wanted to build a business known for making a difference through the highest standards of care. I think we’re on track.”
