The New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) have teamed up with disability support service and NDIS provider What Ability to celebrate inclusion, diversity and support.
What Ability brings professional athletes together with people living with a disability, letting them experience the joys of sport, holiday camps, beach days and indoor activities alongside elite sports players.
For the first time this year the NSWRL will also take the time to recognise and present an ‘Inclusive Athlete of the Year Award’ to commemorate the community support made possible through this partnership.
“The Brad Fittler Medal provides an opportunity for elite players to grassroots volunteers to be recognised for the outstanding contribution they have made to Rugby League that season,” said NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden.
The award will be presented at the Brad Fittler Medal night, along with the men’s and women’s State of Origin teams, NSWRL Major Competitions and Junior Representatives Competitions, Referees, Rugby League Officials and Volunteers.
“What Ability is an industry leader in the disability sector, and we look forward to the opportunities this partnership will provide into the future.
“I would like to thank What Ability for giving the NSWRL this opportunity to be part of the wonderful and rewarding work that they do.”
“It is only fitting that we have an award that acknowledges inclusion as it illustrates what the NSWRL stands for.”
What Ability Chief Executive Officer Belinda Woodford welcomed the partnership and the “synergy” between the two organisations, which was on full display at the ‘Inclusion Gala Day’ held at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence.
“Partnering with an organisation who shares our passion for inclusivity and embracing the power of sport to break down barriers and existing stigmas, is really special.
“We can’t wait to see what opportunities arise this year as both organisations work towards showcasing disability and inclusion at the forefront of Rugby League.”
The Gala hosted a diverse crowd of 120 attendees, eager to give it their best in a wholesome and energetic display of activities and action.
True Blues Jake and Tom Trbojevic, and Harvey Norman NSW Sky Blues back-rower Shaylee Bent were among those leading the charge in dedicating their time to a great cause; Manly Sea Eagles players Ben Trbojevic, Karl Lawton and Sean Keppie are also stepping up to spread the smiles.
What Ability Media and Community Manager Todd Liubinskas was proud to announce their partnership with the Manly team.
”Manly will play an essential role in helping What Ability build and showcase an inclusive Australia,” Liubinskas said.
“With shared core values and a joint focus on inclusion, we are so excited to team up and harness the power of sport to break down barriers and existing perceptions of the disability sector.”
