Put simply, a support coordinator is there to help you make the most of your NDIS plan. They work alongside you to connect with services, build your confidence, and ensure your supports are working as intended.

What is a support coordinator?

An NDIS support coordinator is a professional who assists participants in understanding and implementing their NDIS plan. Their goal is to help you gain greater independence and improve your ability to manage supports in the long run.

Depending on your individual needs, support coordination may be included in your plan under Capacity-building supports.

There are three levels of support coordination:

  • Support Connection, which involves short-term assistance to connect with informal, community and funded supports;
  • Support Coordination, consisting of ongoing support to manage services, build skills and respond to challenges; and
  • Specialist Support Coordination for people with complex needs who require a higher level of support.

Key responsibilities of a support coordinator

A support coordinator does much more than just organise appointments.

  • They understand your plan and help you use your funds effectively.
  • They connect you with services such as therapy, assistive technology or community groups — your coordinator will help you find and connect with suitable providers.
  • They coordinate with you and your chosen providers to ensure your supports are delivered smoothly.
  • They help you build capacity and encourage you to take on more responsibility over time, along with how you can manage your own supports.
  • They help you manage crises when something unexpected happens; your coordinator can help you navigate the situation, make alternative arrangements and ensure continuity of care.
  • They monitor your progress and regularly check in with you to see how things are going.

Why is support coordination important?

Navigating the NDIS can be overwhelming at times, especially at the start of your journey. A support coordinator acts as a guide, advocate and problem-solver. They take the pressure off by helping you stay organised and get the most out of your funding.

More importantly, they take the time to understand your goals, preferences and lifestyle. It’s about personalised support that empowers you to live the life you choose.

Do I need a support coordinator?

Some people will have support coordination funded in their plan, but others may not. The NDIS will include it based on your circumstances, such as if you’re new to the scheme, have complex support needs or require help coordinating different providers.

If you think you’d benefit from having a support coordinator, speak with your local area coordinator (LAC) or planner. You can also request it during your plan reassessment.

A support coordinator can be a vital part of your NDIS journey, helping you feel more confident, connected and in control. Whether you’re new to the scheme or just looking for a bit of extra help navigating it all, support coordination is there to make things easier and more empowering.
